Hi, I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and knew of a solution:
I have a HDC-TM700. After copying some files to my PC, I was renaming the folder and I also copied some other files into that folder. HD Writer started not seeing my video files. All the original files are still there. I removed the ones I added and renamed the folder back, but no luck. I even tried re-installing HD Writer. The files still play in GOM Player. However I am unable to use HD Writer on the files .

I was able to get the folder to be recognized properly if I re-register it. I had to remove that folder from list, apply, ok, back to main menu, then add it back in. Would be nice to just have a refresh button, but oh well. -Dave

I figured it out. The software only recognizes files it imports directly from the camera. It wont recognize a file that is on you hard drive unless you imported it there from the camera first.

I've been having a similar problem, except nothing I do seems to fix it. I downloaded a first batch of thirty or so video files (M2TS) from my new TM700 using HD Writer AE 2.1, and had no problems viewing, editing, or burning them to DVD. However, when I tried downloading the next bunch, HD Writer created folders and transferred the M2TS and associated files to the PC, but wouldn't recognize them. I verified that the files are actually there on the PC hard drive, but as far as HD Writer is concerned the folders are empty (grayed out). I tried refreshing, deleting and re-registering folders, un- and re-installing HD Writer, and even changing the properties of the M2TS files to 'open with' HD Writer by default, but nothing has worked.
What's even more puzzling, HD Writer sees some, but not all, JPEG (still photo) files in other folders on my PC hard drive. Whether or not they appear seems to be completely arbitrary.. they were all taken with the same camera (not the TM700), and not edited or modified in any way, but for whatever reason HD Writer recognizes one but not the other.
From reading many other posts about the TM700 I sense a pattern here.. love the camcorder, but the software leaves a lot to be desired.
    Any ideas?

I am also facing this unresolved problem. Its difficult to understand the behaviuor of HD writer once you reached its maximum file number (30 I think)
Another issue is the difference between windows explorer and writer « explorer »
One 6 giga .m2ts file was seen as one only file in writer but 2 files in windows explorer (4+2 ) the 2 gigas file had the same naming as the 4 gigas one but with addition of braketed (1)

I think pretty much all pcs are formatted in FAT32, which has a 4gb limitation. However, Panasonic video files have the primary stream file, and additional files which associate with HD Writer. Those additional files affect how HD Writer percieves the stream files. Thus, if the secondary files display the video as one clip, HD Writer will think they are both one as well, despite the fact that your actual hard drive is formatted such that that is not possible.

    Hd Writer Ae 5.3 Download

    I THINK thats correct, anyway.
Also, what is this 30file max? I have much more than 30 files in many of my folders.

According to page 42 of the HD Writer manual, a maximum of 30 folders [not individual video files] can be registered. I only have 4 folders (plus a handful of subfolders) registered, so that doesn't explain why HD Writer isn't seeing the downloaded files. It also doesn't explain why HD Writer recognizes some, but not all, JPEG files in those folders. As far as I can tell, there is nothing in the filename, extender, or metadata that would distinguish one of the 'recognizable' photos from the 'unrecognizable' ones. It seems to be completely random.
I e-mailed Panasonic tech support about two weeks ago, but haven't received a response. Their live chat thing seems to be completely useless too. How can they make such a great camcorder and have such lousy software/tech support?

Fully agree, I cant understand the behaviour of writer dealing with its folder file system. I am aware and dont move misplace rename files in windows explorer in order to make it easy for writer to deal with that. Its a mess.

OK, so I finally got through to Panasonic live chat. They advised me to have a 'PC technician' check my computer to see what's wrong. Useless..
I also tried using REGEDIT to delete the Panasonic registry keys that are left over when you uninstall HD Writer, but that didn't solve the problem either.
One thing I did notice after reinstalling and attempting to download additional files to my PC is that Writer does acknowledge how many files were copied. A dialog box pops up and says 'x files were copied,' or words to that effect. However, they don't show up in the GUI screen, so I can't view, edit or burn them.
Bottom line.. HD Writer AE 2.1 doesn't do what it's supposed to. Can anyone suggest another video editing program that allows manipulation of 1080p/60 and AVCHD files? Is there a program that will allow you to burn both hi-def (1080p/60 or AVCHD) and MPEG2 videos to the same DVD? I know the final product would be of uneven consistency (some videos would be lower res than others), but I have videos of my kid in all three formats, and I'd like to be able to put them on a single disc to send to relatives.

You should not give up on it yet. I recommend getting a whole new card, try this before giving up on HD Writer, if nothing else the conversion assist is worth trying to hang in a little longer.
The other card can probably be older one if you have one, my old 2gb non-class rated cards work fine.

-reformat the card with the camcorder to start with

    -then record some test shots.
-Start HD Writer as admin, just to reduce variables. (right click, and run as admin)
-Hook to mini usb, rather than plugging the card in directly, just to reduce variables. It can work either way, but better to get it working first.
-if it tries to automatically copy, I recommend saying no, then click 'copy to pc' manually (in upper left of HD Writer). Again, it can do it automatically, but maybe step by step yourself will reveal a problem? Who knows..
-it will take you to a new page, click on the camcorder and continue.
    -it will open your files.
-Click copy 'copy selected files' ( Theoretically it seems to make sense, imo, that the already corrupted files could cause a problem with the simple copy selection procedure?)
-Copy to extraction date folder, which it will create for you. Make sure the date is correct at this point, just to check. You should not have to change it.
If this still does not work, but all of the steps were executed correctly..then that is baffling..but, if something messes up along the way, at least you know you followed correct procedures and might be able to narrow down the problem.
Sorry if you know all this already. You know how it is, a simple step might be missed and cause all kinds of mayhem.

Thanks, workinghard. I tried everything you suggested, but the result is the same.. HD Writer 'sees' the files on the camcorder (or in this case the SD card in the camcorder), copies them to the PC and creates an extraction date folder, but won't acknowledge them in its main screen. I'm also able to play back all video files directly from the TM700 or the SD card using Writer's 'Media Playback' function, so if the problem is file corruption it's apparently not occurring until they get copied to the computer.

    I have the same problem
If I change the folder name from within HD Writer (2.1) it seems to create a second folder in windows (I am using Vista).
When in Vista the old folder is not deleted and appears in the folder list but windows says it has been moved if you try to access it.
Changing the folder name back in HD writer seems to allow you to access the old folder.
I think the problem is that HD writer is not complying with windows permission locks. For instance even though I was viewing a video in the folder in quicktime HD writer allowed me to change the folder name. In other words it did not check that teh folder name was safe to change and not locked by another application. (If you tried this in windows with an open word document windows would not allow you).
This is the heart of the problem. It is clearly a fault with the way HD Writer manages folder names with respect to windows. It does not do it properly.
My Conclusion: If i want to change a folder name, then close HD writer, change it in windows and open it later. Even then it may not find it.

HD Writer is a tricky beast. There are two lineups: HD Writer (up to 2.6, I think) and HD Writer AE (up to 3.0). The original HD Writer was supplied from 2006 to 2008, the AE is provided from 2008. The earlier version cannot read some newer formats like 1080p60, which is understandable, but the AE version cannot read the old 1440x1080 interlaced format, which is total bollocks. It even shows that the file is of AVCHD type, but refuses to work with it. Bottom line: you pretty much needed a tailored version of HD Writer for particular footage you have if you want to use this software. I gave up and use Vegas instead.

In addition, the files recorded on my sdx1 and EDITED with hd writer 2.6 can be registered (viewed, edited again, etc) on ae 2.1, whereas originally unedited files can not. Bullocks sounds pretty apt to me.

The camcorder records the files together. Changing the name of the file in Explorer only affects the file name. The .cont, .m2ts, .pmpd, and .tmb files are linked together INSIDE each of the files. By changing the name in Explorer, you have broken the link since the file data is not made aware of the change. You can recover your link by opening the .cont file in Notepad. Amid the junk, you'll see something like this: 1 2 - 0 3 - 2 0 1 1 _ 1 2 5 0 1 9 . t m b. Simply rename each file, without the spaces, with the prefix: 12-03-2011_125019.
Now you have: 12-03-2011_125019.cont, 12-03-2011_125019.m2ts, 12-03-2011_125019.pmpd, and 12-03-2011_125019.tmb. Open HDWriter and refresh the folder. You should see your movie clips! Only rename your files inside this program-- it updates the links inside each file.

What did you do to 'register them' Dave? I have video files from a Panasonic Lumix still camera that HD writer won't recognise, even though they're Panasonic, AND .m2ts. I just can't work it out.

Don't you stillhave the original on the SD card?
download a trial of Magix Movie Edit Pro 2013 or something like that, and see if you can.
    Or windows DVD maker?
What exactly is on the SD card now? You should put it in your pc and see what files are on there. See if you can identify the originals.

I tried another software 'Video editor'. Of cause it can´t handle the 50fps frame rate. I have no clue how to edit my 1080/50p AVCHD files…..

Besides HDWriter, what have you tried? And, what are you using for a computer?
There are around 30 on the market. A few are quite popular and work very well with AVCHD footage.

'Movie editor' and 'easy soft movie editor'.
I would really appreciate a good basic software (more or less cut and stitch) that handles AVCHD, MOV and MP4 1080p with 50 and 60fps without losing in quality.

There are around 30 'non-linear-editors' or 'NLEs' to pick from. Nobody really knows, but I think the three most commonly used are:
    1-Corel VideoStudio Pro X7 http://www.amazon.com/Corel-VSPRX7EN../dp/B00IIL0SCS
    2-Sony Movie Studio 13 http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Movie-Stu..io+13+platinum
    3-Adobe Premiere Elements 12 http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-65225383..er+Elements+12
They are all between about $40 and $60. They all have fans. I've never met anyone that is expert at more than one of them, so getting meaningful comparisons is not likely.
My favorite is Premier Elements because it is the one I learned. It seems to me that it has the most learning opportunities. Most of my footage is AVCHD 1080p and I've had no issues. I've tried MOV and MP4 footage with out any problems.
Please note that AVCHD video requires a strong computer as the 'codecs' used are complex. If you have a weaker computer, take advantage of your cameras MP4 choices.
In the Windows world, the latest versions of the free Windows Movie Maker seem to work for many. http://www.win-movie-maker.com/?meta..A_6HpxxCzw_wcB
    Good luck!

    Thank you Bill!
Regarding Adobe premiere elements 12, you can import 1080p 50/60p ACVHD, but can you EXPORT the final movie in the same 1080p 50/60p?
I´ve read a lot now. 'Adobe Premiere Pro 11' cannot do it. Nor can 'AVS Video editor', 'Avid Media composer 7' or any other software I have read about (except Sony Vega Pro)
So, out of 30 video edit software programs - there may exist one or two which does not affect the final movie.

    Premier Elements 10, 11 and 12 will output or export to 1920x1080 50/60p. (Publish+Share > Computer > AVCHD > MP4 1920x1080 30 > Advanced > Change the frame rate > Save as personal Preset ).
There is a reason that few of the 30 NLEs do what you want. It is because very few videographers what to publish their work without improving it in post processing. The same is true for photography. We capture light data, even on film, and work to 'develop' the potential of the captured light data. Writer
The concept of output being the exact same as input, frame by frame, is usually called 'lossless editing'. No offence to those that want to practice it, but it is a limiting goal most suited to people that want to share camera tests and camera manufacturers that want you to have a simple 'lossless' option.
To be lossless the software has to be so limited in functionality it becomes almost useless for anything remotely creative.
Panasonic's 'lossless' capable software is HDWriter. It does work for lossless editing if you follow its precise rules. Sony's solution was called PMB (Picture Motion Browser) and is now called PMH (PlayMemories Home). Sony has precise rules too. I don't know what Canon or the others provide. I've used Panasonic's and Sony's software on an ordinary laptop with no problem, as long as I follow the precise workflow rules.
The single 3rd Party NLE in the low priced category that claims to do lossless editing is called 'TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer 4'. If not used it, but some extol its virtues.
I've read that both Sony and Adobe professional (read expensive) software will do limited smart rendering depending on the user accepting precise conditions.
If you want to make HDWriter work for your 'cut and stitch' lossless editing, I may be able to help you. But, I need to know if you've read the manual and how you are using it, step by step.

Quote:The camcorder records the files together.
I tried this. There were strange symbols and then the numbers, which I altered. Still not recognized. I have one file that already recognized, I opened the .cont file, it was spread out just the same as the ones it won't recognize.

If you want to use HD Writer, you should not simply copy files from a card onto computer's hard drive. You should do 'import' or 'capture' or whatever this feature is called in HD Writer. It will copy files from the card onto HDD, and will rename then accordingly. Then it will be able to work with them. I think the user's manual mentions this.

I use Smart Renderer 5 for some of my simple videos. Even 4K 60p H.264 files can be edited together using smart render.
    http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tmsr5.html
It would be a dream for Premiere Pro to be capable of smart rendering standard H.264 files. If only TMPGEnc made smart rendering plug-ins for some of the top Editing programs. Premiere Pro does smart render other codecs so perhaps it might happen one day.
Here's a list of formats Adobe supports:
